Reduce the Risk for Medication Errors: Key Nursing Considerations for Common Camp Medications Michael Ambrose, MD

As a camp nurse you are likely to dispense hundreds, if not thousands, of medications each summer, and many medications that you may not be familiar with. It is essential that you understand the principles of medication management and administration to ensure the health and safety of the campers and staff you care for at camp.  Together we will review best practices to minimize the potential for medication errors and review common medications you are likely to administer at camp.

Anticipating the Effects of the COVID-19 Pandemic on Campers and Camp Staff Bob Ditter, M.ED., LCSW

The effects of the pandemic—economic uncertainty for many families; online school; social distancing; the threat of death, sickness and loss; a disruption of our normal routines and social connections—has brought with it a host of MESH issues for camper and camp staff. Using the stages of grief as a framework, Bob will walk us through some of the MESH issues he has seen in children both in his psychotherapy practice as well as in the campers of the summer camps that did in fact open during summer of 2020. He will also outline various ways to address these issues in the camp setting.

Beyond COVID-19: Communicable Disease Updates & Response Plans for Camps Linda Erceg, RN, MS, PHN

COVID19’s impact upon the Camp Community included several lessons for communicable disease response that challenged previously held assumptions. One of these is the importance of developing a response plan that distinguishes among endemic, localized, epidemic, and pandemic outbreaks. Using these and other concepts, this session describes the essential components for a given camp’s communicable disease plan and updates camp nurses regarding communicable disease management based on contemporary information from camp professionals and sources such as M. Osterholm, the CDC, and R. Webber.
