Can an LPN/LVN serve at camp in the same capacity as a “First Aider” or do they need something additional and what would that look like? I know an RN needs to have orders signed by a Dr and a first aider just follows the first aid training and parents’ direction. What would an LPN/LVN need?

And is there a difference between LVN and LPN?

    Thanks,
    Jill

    Hi Jill,

I think this can be a tough one as I think it really depends on the state as far as what an LPN/LVN is allowed to do or manage within the scope of their practice. I’m in WI and we have an LPN who provides coverage at our boys camp and I’m the RN at the girls camp just down the road. I specifically have our standing orders written very thoroughly so there is no question about the process for whatever issues arise and our camp MD who signs our orders is aware that we have an LPN and an RN for the camps. If the LPN has anything outside of our standing orders outline or anything she even has a question about she contacts me and I will generally advise based on the info she provides or will go over to the boy’s camp to evaluate the situation myself and then direct things from there.

In our state the RN is allowed to delegate tasks to the LPN and we don’t ask our LPN to do anything outside her scope which essentially allows her to do basic first aid, meds, and a very basic assessment based on our standing order guidelines. I haven’t seen an LVN in a long time and I’m pretty sure our state doesn’t “license” them any longer as I’ve only ever seen the LPN. Hope this helps a little.

In Texas, we have LVN’s instead of LPN’s. They operate very similarly. I agree with Marie, we have one LVN who is coming to camp this summer and she will operate with the standing orders, clinic guidelines, and has RN’s on site and available for consultation as needed as well as the practitioner. I believe they are not to create the plan of care, but can act on the plan once established by the RN/practitioner.
    Have a great summer!
