Hi all. I’m having a hard time finding a provider that can sign my standing orders for this coming summer. I’m a new year-round camp health supervisor and I have an RN, but we need a provider who can sign orders and I don’t know how to go about finding those people! Any tips?

Edit: By “I have an RN” I mean I myself am the camp RN and need someone to sign standing orders.

I would go into your local pediatrician offices and talk to the office managers. The managers could hook you up with some of the physicians that might be willing to help out. The local ER is another good place to look. Contact the nurse manager of the ER and tell them what you need, hopefully they would be willing to ask around and set you up with some physicians that are willing to take that on. You could also find what physician group the ER docs are a part of and find a general email for the group and send out an email.

Must a supervising provider be licensed in the same state as the camp?

Great question. There are several ways to find a provider. First, remember that in most states a provider can by a physician or a nurse practitioner. I see some of the recommendations already provided which are great. Also consider, schools of nursing and urgent care clinics. Most importantly, you have to develop a relationship with a provider for them to get to know you and know your skill set while developing trust. Invite people to the camp – show them around. Give them an understanding of your camp health services. My willingness to sign standing orders is directly related to my comfort level with the camp requesting my support.

In response to Andrea – yes – the provide should be licensed in the same state as the camp. Prescribers do not have inter-state licensing opportunities at present.

I know finding a provider can take some time, but if you do it right, they will support you for many years. It is a relationship business for sure.
