    Hello everyone!
I’m a new-ish camp nurse heading up our health center, hoping to get some guidance on setting up a schedule for my staff. We are a residential camp with 2 RNs and 2 aides for a total of 5 weeks (for about 200 campers and 115 staff).

I’ll have myself and the other RN alternate nights on call, and I know so much is dependent on how the summer is going, but I’m not sure how much off-time to shoot for with each person. Personally, it’s easy for me to shrug off any rest time to my long-term detriment, so I’d love to at least start off with clear guidelines for us all.

Any thoughts on whether it would be useful to have both aides on at the same time or alternate shifts?

I’d appreciate any guidance or being pointed to any helpful resources.
    Thanks so much,
    Joanna

    Joanna:

Thanks for your post. I am sure there are nurses who can share what has worked at their camp. I want to share that an important feature of a quality healthcare staff is that they are not fatigued. We want you to get rest and relaxation that benefits you and your team the best. When fatigue sets in, we make poorer decisions, we forget important tasks, and we don’t communicate well. All three lead to a storm of errors and misjudgment.

I don’t know that anyone can tell you what is best for you and your camp as we don’t know your operations or structure. In most camps, the first thing in the morning and last thing at night are their busy times. Finding some downtime in the middle of the day for each of you may benefit you for the long haul.

    Best to you
