Wondering how you all approach coconut in your programs. I realized most children who are allergic to tree nuts are able to eat coconut, however this is not always the case. With conflicting information out there about whether coconut is classified a tree nut or a fruit (yes, I know FDA considers it a tree nut, but it’s not always classified that way in practice by parents and doctors), I am trying to decide how to ensure we have correct information about camper allergies so that we prevent accidental ingestion of an allergen. We are nut aware, but not nut-free, in our programs.
I’m considering reaching out individually to families with a known tree nut allergy and asking some more specific questions about their child. I’d love to hear your thoughts/ideas before I do. Thanks!
