Hello, checking in – we have noticed an increase in camper bone fractures. We have not seen a trend by activity, element, or any other aspect. I am wondering if you have seen an increase in bone fractures at your camp? Is it a lack of exercise, physical education in schools, another outcome of COVID. Please share your experience

We did. We also saw an uptick in twisted ankles and jammed fingers. I propose that some portion of these children haven’t had the same exposure to free play during the past two years and aren’t as aware of their movements (and have less practice.)

What an interesting observation! I understand that kids haven’t been as active or a unfamiliar with camp physical activity so the sprained ankles and jammed fingers that Matt wrote about sound somewhat “reasonable.” But increased fractures suggest force strong enough to go beyond events like sprains. That makes me wonder if there’s something about the mechanism of injury might comes into play. What do you think, LuAnne? Have you looked at the context of the fractures to determine the origin of the force?
