Managing Diabetes at Camp
Dr. Abby Hollander
Diabetes management of campers can be a challenge for camp staff who may not have much prior experience with diabetes. Children with diabetes want to experience the fun and connection of camp with the reassurance that camp staff will help them stay healthy and safe. The ACN Online Course Managing Diabetes at Camp is a comprehensive 13-module course developed as a collaboration between the American Diabetes Association and the Association of Camp Nursing. It covers basic diabetes pathophysiology, how insulin works, and common insulin regimens. It explains how to address problems such as high blood sugars, low blood sugars, sick days, and emergencies. It presents a guide to current technology, including insulin pumps and continuous glucose monitors. It provides guidance on what information should be obtained prior to camp. The modules include problem-solving scenarios and interactive videos, as well as links to additional resources. Diabetes at Camp will allow you to feel informed and confident as you support campers and staff with diabetes.
Additional resource: written diabetes care plan or Diabetes Medical Management Plan can be found at www.diabetes.org/dmmp.
ACN Online Courses are for ACN members and non-members. Nursing contact hours are provided for each course.
